What is family therapy? Family therapy aims to transform emotional involvement and all those emotional factors that hinder the proper functioning of the family unit into a valuable resource for overcoming these difficulties. Communication and the contribution of each member are fundamental: members may experience conflicts and create distressing situations that, without the help of a therapist, cannot be resolved. Family therapy is useful when relationships and dynamics within the family unit cause discomfort or distress to one or more people in the family system, and when the members try to change the situation but are unable to do so due to the high level of emotional involvement, which constitutes an obstacle to change. This emotional involvement, however, can be very useful if channeled in the right direction. Specifically, the problems for which family psychotherapy is sought include: - Parental difficulties in raising their children - Communication difficulties among family members, especially during adolescence. - - Problems between parents (in this case, we could consider couples therapy) - Difficulty living alone, as can happen especially after retirement - Difficulty overcoming a traumatic event such as a death, accident, abuse, separation, etc. - Episodes related to school bullying, eating disorders, teenage depression, drug or internet addiction.
